Dogs- Emotional fools??!;

Dogs - The Emotional Fools

I have watched dogs all my life. Not as a scientist. Not as a trainer. As a man who is confused by how much they love and how little they get back.

A dog sees you. Its tail wags. Its eyes soften. Its whole body becomes a question: are you happy to see me? do you love me? will you stay?

You could have left it alone all day. You could have forgotten to fill its water bowl. You could have shouted at it yesterday for no reason. And still, when you walk through the door, the dog acts like you are the sun. Like your arrival is the best thing that has ever happened.

That is not loyalty. That is something more pathetic and more beautiful. That is emotional foolishness.

---

The Foolishness

A dog does not learn. Not really. You can hit a dog. You can chain it in the sun. You can ignore it for weeks. And the moment you show it a scrap of kindness, the dog forgets everything. It wags. It leans into your hand. It loves you again.

That is not intelligence. That is not self-preservation. That is a kind of madness. The same madness that makes humans stay in love that hurts. The same madness that makes us forgive what should not be forgiven. The same madness that keeps us hoping, even when hope has let us down a hundred times.

Dogs are emotional fools. And we love them for it. Because they love us the way we wish we could love. Without calculation. Without defense. Without the constant, exhausting question of whether we will get hurt.

---

The Transaction

A dog does not ask what you can give. It does not calculate your income, your status, your connections, your future potential. It does not care if you are handsome or ugly, successful or broken, sane or mad.

A dog cares about one thing. Are you here? Will you touch me? Will you look at me like I matter?

That is the whole transaction. Presence. Touch. Attention.

We humans have made love into a contract. A negotiation. A constant tally of who gave what and who owes whom. Dogs do not have that word. They do not need it. They simply give. And give. And give. Even when the giving is not returned.

That is foolish. That is also holy.

The Mirror

When I look at a dog, I see what I have lost. The ability to love without fear. To forgive without conditions. To be happy simply because someone walked into the room.

I cannot do that. My brain is too complicated. My history is too heavy. My heart has been broken too many times. I calculate. I protect. I hold back.

The dog does not hold back. The dog jumps into love the way a child jumps into water. Without knowing how deep it is. Without caring if they can swim.

That is not stupidity. That is courage. The kind of courage that comes from not knowing how much you can be hurt. Or knowing, and loving anyway.

---

The Betrayal

We do not deserve dogs. That is not a sentimental line. That is a fact.

We chain them. We leave them. We shout at them. We forget them in the heat. We surrender them to shelters when they become inconvenient. We cut parts of their bodies because it is fashionable.

And they still love us.

That is not forgiveness. That is something sadder. Something more like addiction. They are addicted to us. To our hands. To our voices. To the small, inconsistent scraps of affection we throw them between neglects.

We are their drug. And they are fools for us.

---

The Honest Question

Who is more foolish? The dog who loves without reason? Or the human who has a dog and still feels alone?

I have seen people with dogs who stare at their phones while the dog waits for a glance. I have seen people who take photos of their dogs for social media but do not walk them. I have seen people who love the idea of a dog but not the reality of the dog.

The dog does not care about the idea. The dog cares about the walk. The touch. The sound of your voice saying its name.

We are the fools. We think love is something we feel. The dog knows love is something we do.

---

A Note for the Mad

If your brain rushes. If you cannot rest. If the medication fog makes everything heavy. Sit with a dog. Not a phone. Not a thought. Just the dog.

The dog does not care about your diagnosis. It does not care about your past. It does not care about the money you do not have or the T-shirts you cannot afford.

It cares that you are here. That you are breathing. That your hand is resting on its head.

That is not a cure. That is not a solution. That is just a few minutes of not being alone in your madness. A few minutes of loving something that loves you back without conditions. Without calculation. Without the exhausting dance of human relationship.

The dog is an emotional fool. So am I. So are you, if you are honest.

Maybe that is not an insult. Maybe that is the only sane way to live. Loving without knowing why. Staying when you should leave. Wagging your tail even though the world has given you a thousand reasons not to.

The dog knows something we have forgotten. Love is not smart. Love is not safe. Love is not a good investment.

Love is just love. Foolish. Beautiful. Unstoppable.

Like the dog. Like the mad man. Like the few notes that keep becoming more.
